The 53rd International Art Exhibition, titled Making Worlds // Fare Mondi // Bantin Duniyan // 制造世界 // Weltenmachen // Construire des Mondes // Fazer Mundos…, directed by Daniel Birnbaum, will open to the public from 7 June to 22 November 2009 in the Giardini and the Arsenale exhibition venues, as well as in various other locations around the city. (The press preview will take place on 4, 5, 6 June 2009). Two Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement will be awarded to Yoko Ono and John Baldessari – two of the most important artists of our time

Last minute announcements and new initiatives are being listed in the catalogue of the 53rd International Art Exhibition (Biennale of Arti Visive/Biennale of Visual Arts), titled "Making Worlds", which will take place in Venice from 7 June to 22 November 2009. Besides the Giardini and the Arsenale exhibition venues, many other locations in the city. The National Participations are this year amounting to the record number of 77 Nations participating including first-time participations of Montenegro, Principality of Monaco, Republic of Gabon, Union of Comoros, and United Arab Emirates.Furthermore there is a record number of 38 Collateral Events, proposed by international organizations and institutions, which will organize their own exhibitions and initiatives in Venice during the occasion.
Inaugurating the renovated headquarters of the Biennale as yet another exhibition venue, The Vision Machine: Futurists in the Biennale will be presented at Ca’ Giustinian from June to November 2009. The exhibition explores the presence of Futurist artists, ideas and works in the Biennale. Curated by IUAV, International Semiotics Laboratory Venice, it is the result of a research undertaken at the Historic Archive of the Contemporary Arts (ASAC).
One of the main innovations of the 53rd International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale is the enlargement of the Italian Pavilion (Tese delle Vergini in the Arsenale) to include the former Italian Pavilion, increasing the current 800 square metres to 1,800 square metres.
With the renewal project, the Arsenale area will be linked to the city via a new bridge; in addition, the former Italian Pavilion in the Arsenale will become the “Padiglione Italia”, and the former Padiglione Italia in the Giardini will become the “Palazzo delle Esposizioni” of the Venice Biennale.

The press preview will take place on the 4th, 5th and 6th of June 2009, and two Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement will be awarded to Yoko Ono and John Baldessari.
